Cultural Arts Everywhere: Bringing the Arts to Buchanan Every Summer

Each summer, Cultural Arts Everywhere brings a season of creativity, connection, and cultural experiences to the Buchanan, Michigan community. Through free and accessible programming for children, teens, adults, and older adults, CAE creates opportunities for residents to experience live music, explore their own creativity, develop new skills, and connect with their neighbors.

Summer 2026 continued this ongoing tradition, with a diverse lineup of programs taking place throughout Buchanan. From music and performing arts to youth education and community celebrations, the season demonstrated Cultural Arts Everywhere’s continued commitment to making the arts an active and accessible part of everyday community life.

The summer began with Sing! The Many Health Benefits of Singing at the Buchanan Area Senior Center, exploring the physical, emotional, and social benefits of making music together. Additional Sing! programs included Salute to the Stars and Stripes! and The Great American Songbook, celebrating familiar American music while creating opportunities for connection and participation. Intergenerational Sing! brought generations together through music, reinforcing the idea that the arts can create meaningful connections across age groups.

Music took center stage at The Buchanan Jazz and Blues Festival, presented by The Buchanan Common and Greta Pope. The June 13 celebration offered a full day of free live music featuring Lago Rojo Latin Band, The Resurrection Blues Band, Don Savoie Band, and Greta Pope’s Jazz Rhythm and Blues Revue. The festival brought residents and visitors together at The Buchanan Common to experience a wide range of musical styles in a welcoming community setting.

The festival also drew music lovers from Chicago, Detroit, South Bend, and other surrounding communities, extending its reach well beyond Buchanan. By welcoming visitors from across the region, the event not only provided entertainment for local residents but also introduced new audiences to Buchanan and its vibrant community, helping shine a wider spotlight on the “Nicest Place in America.”

Cultural Arts Everywhere also continued to create opportunities for young people to explore the arts and develop new skills. At the Buchanan District Library, teens participated in Smartphone Filmmaking for Teens, learning how to create and edit a professional-quality film using nothing more than a smartphone. Verbal Combat: The Debate! introduced students to the art of debate while building confidence, communication, and critical-thinking skills with guidance from a licensed attorney. Panic at The Improv! gave teens an opportunity to explore improvisational performance through an engaging workshop led by the President of the Chicago Local Screen Actors Guild.

Community celebration remained an important part of the summer as well. During Buchanan PRIDE at The Common, Cultural Arts Everywhere celebrated local creativity by presenting the 2025 Buchanan’s Got Talent winners. The summer then culminated in Buchanan’s Got Talent 2026, an annual community favorite that invites performers of all ages to step onto the stage and share their talents with their neighbors. Held at The Loading Dock, the event celebrated local performers and brought the Buchanan community together for an evening of music, movement, laughter, and enthusiastic support.

While the lineup changes from year to year, the mission remains the same: to make the arts a meaningful part of life in Buchanan. Cultural Arts Everywhere intentionally brings programming into familiar community spaces such as the Buchanan Area Senior Center, Buchanan District Library, The Buchanan Common, and The Loading Dock, creating opportunities for people to participate regardless of age or previous arts experience.

Cultural Arts Everywhere’s contributions to Buchanan extend beyond its summer programming as well. The organization also created Christmas in Buchanan, an original holiday song created to celebrate the spirit of the Buchanan community while encouraging residents and visitors to support local small businesses during the holiday season. Through projects like this, CAE continues to use the arts not only as a form of entertainment, but as a way to celebrate Buchanan, promote local businesses, and strengthen connections within the community.

The goal is simple: to keep creating opportunities for Buchanan to learn, perform, connect, and celebrate through the arts, year after year.

For Greta Pope, that commitment to Buchanan is deeply personal and longstanding. Greta has been a seasonal resident of Buchanan for 45 years and has remained deeply committed to the community and its arts and cultural life. Since 2022, Cultural Arts Everywhere has contributed to Buchanan’s summer programming, engaging community members of all ages through music, performing arts, educational programs, and cultural experiences. From bringing free arts programming to community spaces to creating opportunities for local performers and audiences, Greta and CAE have continued to invest in the community that has been an important part of her life for decades. Her work demonstrates that meaningful community involvement is not defined by being a full-time resident, but by the time, creativity, resources, and commitment invested in helping a community thrive.
